Starlink has played a significant role in the defense of Ukraine against the Russian invasion, helping the Ukrainian military to maintain battlefield communications and the general public to guarantee Internet access when Ukraine’s communications networks were threatened. Chinese researchers think that Western countries will deploy Starlink throughout Asia in case of potential wars as a result of the service’s success in Ukraine.

Starlink’s use in Ukraine has been a topic of concern both within Russia and in the West. As the invasion began last year, SpaceX swiftly deployed its satellite user dishes to Ukraine. However, later on, when information concerning paying for Starlink in Ukraine started to surface, relations between SpaceX and the U.S. government became strained. The situation was resolved when Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, declared that his organization would continue to support Starlink in Ukraine. Later, the company’s president, Ms. Gwynne Shotwell, acknowledged having requested assistance from the Pentagon for Ukraine-related expenses. Early this year, the Ukrainian ministry of communications also emphasized that Starlink had contributed more than $100 million to Ukraine.

Chinese researchers are alarmed by the Ukrainian military’s capacity to resume contacts over Starlink in this context. Researchers connected to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) are concerned about China’s potential to block Starlink, according to a Reuters investigation that looked at 100 research articles published in Chinese publications and included work from researchers, weapons makers, and think tanks.

Six of the 100 papers highlighted Starlink, pointing out that the fact that it helped the Ukrainian military regain communications after the Russian strike may give Western countries more confidence to utilize it in a future fight in Asia. Conflict between the United States and China frequently stems from tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.

Because the chip-making facilities of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in Taiwan are one of the few in the world capable of producing and exporting cutting-edge semiconductors, any potential conflict also poses a threat to disrupt the worldwide semiconductor supply chain.

Researchers have stressed the need for China to have the ability to either block Starlink services or fire down the satellites themselves because of the potential for the internet service to be used as a combat disruptor. Numerous small satellites operating at a height of about 500 kilometers in low Earth orbit make up the Starlink internet constellation. (LEO).
