In a “quick disconnect” phase of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket launch at the time of the launch of Artemis-1, NASA engineers were unable to stop a hydrogen leak.

NASA has a tolerance for a small quantity of hydrogen leaking, and anything beyond a 4% concentration of hydrogen close to the “quick disconnect” is regarded as a flammability threat, according to Eric Berger of Ars Technica.

In response to Berger’s “correct assessment,” Musk said, “Raptor design originally used H2 (hydrogen), but switched to CH4 (methane), which is, in my opinion, the best combination of high efficiency and ease of operation.”
The delta-v difference between H2 and CH4 is minimal for the majority of missions, according to Musk, because the CH4 tank is significantly smaller and doesn’t require insulation.

The difference in velocity that a rocket engine can impose on a spacecraft as a result of the unique impulse and the variance in the mass of the actual vehicle is known as the delta-v.

He asserts that methane (CH4), which is easier to manufacture on Mars, is “extremely critical” for launch missions. A pioneer in the use of liquid hydrogen and methane as fuel is SpaceX.

In 20 years, Elon Musk wants to establish an independent metropolis on Mars. To transport people and goods to the moon, Mars, and beyond, SpaceX is getting ready to launch the Starship mega rocket.

The NASA showstopper, described in the report as “an 8-inch diameter line transporting liquid hydrogen into the rocket, sprung a persistent leak at the inlet, known as a quick-disconnect, leading on board the vehicle,” was the source of the problem.

Days after stating that it will try to launch the Artemis 1 mission again on Sept. 23, NASA changed its mind and delayed the launch.

At a briefing on September 8, NASA stated that a backup launch date of September 27 will be used, if necessary, in order to fly the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft as soon as September 23. Getting the go-ahead from the Eastern Range to extend the certification of the flight termination system (FTS) on SLS, as well as finishing and testing repairs to seals in liquid hydrogen lines attaching to the rocket’s core stage, were required for that timetable.

However, NASA announced that it had scrapped preparations for a launch on September 23 in a late-Sept. 12 update. After pushing out a tanking test to ensure the new seals are functioning correctly from September 17 to September 21, the EPA declared that date to be no longer viable.

The added value of having more time to prepare for the cryogenic demonstration test, and subsequently more time to prepare for the launch, was one of many logistical issues that NASA carefully considered when coming up with the new dates, the agency said in a statement. Additionally, extra time is available to restock the liquid oxygen and hydrogen tanks on the launch pad and provide the launch team’s adequate rest.
